The physical
and emotional bonds between a mother and child begin in the
womb. They continue after birth through breastfeeding, eye
contact, displays of affection, grooming, and discipline.
Every generation has a non-verbal code of touch that makes
evident the psychic and somatic boundaries between its
members. The customs and habits of one generation
prescribe, to a degree, those of the next. It is through
this unspoken familial code that I navigate my intimate
relationships, display affection, and impart love to
others.
